Deprecating Mental Health of Working Women in India

  • Posted In : 2023-Jan-20

Mental health is a critical issue in India's workplace, yet stigma and discrimination persist.

The issue of mental health in the workplace is particularly pronounced for women in India. Women face a unique set of challenges, such as discrimination and gender-based violence, that can have a significant impact on their mental wellbeing.

"Mental illness is still often seen as a personal weakness, a lack of willpower, or even a curse. This makes it difficult for people to seek help, and it makes it hard for employers to provide appropriate support." - Dr. Vikram Patel

According to a report by the National Commission for Women, incidents of workplace sexual harassment have increased by 54% over the past decade. This, combined with the social and cultural pressures that women face in India, can lead to high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.

The stigmatization of mental illness in Indian society also plays a significant role in preventing women from seeking help. Many women fear that disclosing a mental health issue will lead to discrimination or even job loss.

To address this issue, it is crucial for employers in India to create safe and supportive environments for women in the workplace. This can include offering resources such as counseling services and mental health awareness training for managers and employees.

As Dr. Kirti Sabnis, a psychiatrist, explains, "Employers need to recognize that women face unique challenges in the workplace and take steps to support their mental wellbeing. This includes creating an environment where women feel comfortable discussing their mental health concerns and offering resources to help them manage these issues."

In addition, there is a need for broader societal change to address the root causes of gender-based discrimination and violence in India. By creating a more equal and supportive society, women can be empowered to prioritize their mental health and wellbeing, both in and outside of the workplace.
